Project Details

The Bay Area Headquarters Authority has taken up residence in the heart of San Francisco’s Rincon Hill neighborhood. The facility serves as the headquarters of MTC, Association of Bay Area Governments and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Prior to that, the building was home to a World War II tank assembly plant and a U.S. Postal Service facility. The building houses a vital new center for regional collaboration of transportation planning, financing and coordinating for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.

The eight-story, 512,000-square-foot building is a celebration of honoring the old, while embracing the new. The project incorporates reclaimed wood. Workers were able to salvage wooden piers from the old Transbay Terminal and additional wood from the existing structure.

More importantly, the design transformed a monolithic building into a light-filled, flexible office space. Not only does the area support multiple agencies, but it provides the city with some amazing public spaces. In order to achieve a desired open space with plenty of natural light, the center of the building was carved out to create an eight-story open atrium.
