Project Details

UCSF Medical Center’s $1.5 billion, state-of-the-art campus in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco is helping improve the health of children, women and cancer patients. The building is among the greenest urban hospitals in the nation. In 2016, the facility was awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Accreditation, one of the first hospitals in California to achieve this honor.

Architectural millwork was an important facet of the interior design, playing a big part in the overall impression. Aesthetics, durability and sustainability were all considered.

Unique laminates that combine natural veneers with a laminate substrate such as treefrog, and new synthetic materials such as 3form Chroma were introduced for added aesthetic effect. These materials required special care and expertise in the fabrication process. Non-typical hardware, such as point support brackets, were integrated into the millwork detailing. Design elements, such as children’s “crawl holes” in waiting areas and “corridor respite alcoves,” exemplify the special attention to design, detailing, fabrication and the integration of art and millwork.
